So the Hawk is finally going in this weekend and Im not in Cooperstown. Unfortunately do to work and other circumstances, Im not able to make it but I can promise you I will watch every bit of coverage on the MLB Network. Dawson was my favorite player growing up and I have a large collection of his cards and other various memorabilia. The fact that Im not there for the induction pains me but I'll have to get over it and just be happy that he is there. To celebrate, Im posting this blog I wrote about why he deserves to be in the hall of fame. I wrote this about 4 years ago I believe.
The hall of fame, what can I say? I wish I had a vote. It seems to me that there are some extremely good players overlooked by some of the sportswriters. How can Andre Dawson not be in the Hall of Fame yet? Is it because he was as popular with the fans nationwide as Cal Ripken Jr. or Tony Gwynn? Probably so, popularity definitely plays a big part in the voting. After all, look at another Cub in the Hall, Ryne Sandberg. Now don't get me wrong, Ryno was a great player and the people in Chicago loved him. The point of this article however is to compare the stats of Ryno and Hawk and figure out why Hawk is still sitting on the sidelines waiting for his day to get in.
Neither Dawson or Sandberg are members of the 3000 hit club. I can look past that, they make up for it in other categories. Of the 2, Dawson is the closest with 2774 career hits, 388 more than Sandberg. In defense of Sanberg, Dawson did play more seasons and had more at bats. Their career batting averages are extremely close, .285 for Sandberg and .279 for Dawson. Which both are higher than Ripken Jr.'s career average, but that is another story. Andre did strike out 249 more times and Sandberg and he also didn't walk quite as much. Now, how about the stats everyone loves, HRs and RBIs. Dawson came out the big winner in HRs with a total of 438. Ryno was a little far behind in this category with only 282. Dawson edged Sandberg in the RBI category as well, 1591 to 1061. One of my favorite stats is slugging percentage, I don't really know why, I just like it. Dawson topped Sandberg in this category as well, .482 to .452. Are you starting to see my point? Ok, thus far, Ryno has a slightly higher career BA, struck out a few less times and walked a little more. Dawson had more hits, HRs, RBI, AB and a higher slugging percentage. Lets look at the awards these guys won. Andre Dawson was the Rookie of the Year in 1977. Ryne Sandberg was just a rookie in 1983. Sandberg played in 10 All Star games while Dawson only played in 8. Another instance of that popularity factor. Sandberg won 9 Gold Gloves, only 1 more than Dawson. Now the award total that puzzles me the most is the Silver Slugger Award. Dawson only had 4 and Sandberg had 7. Can someone please explain that to me? So, Sandberg played in more All Star games and won a few more awards than Andre Dawson, the point is, it is very close. I agree that Ryne Sandberg should be in the Hall of Fame but I think Andre Dawson should be there right beside him. How is it that with such similar stats between these 2 great players, Sandberg goes in first ballot and Dawson continues to get snubbed every year? It really doesn't make any sense to me. Then again, there are several others who should be in as well, Jim Rice, Dale Murphy, "Goose" Gossage, the list goes on and on. I hope each and every one of these guys make it in eventually but I'm sure some writers will believe that players such as Mark McGwire and the like deserve it more. I mean why induct all these great naturally talented players, when you can induct the steroid induced homerun machines?

Well, there is a method to my madness. Im not one of these guys who is gonna bet every game on the card, although I used to be. Im not gonna post plays and hope and pray they come in. Im not gonna post plays that Im not playing myself. That would be stupid. Im not posting plays to get people to give me points. Im posting plays to help you guys out. Im gonna post serious plays that I pick from the daily card that I know will come through. There will be days where no game really sticks out to me and I will crunch stats and numbers and find a reason to play the game. Those are the days I usually just dont play. I play 80% dogs in baseball. I always have and being able to pick the right ones has paid off greatly for me. My goal everyday is to find one ML play and one Total play that I like. I will bet a lot of totals. I look at how the teams have traveled, where they've been, who they've faced and how long they have been on a homestand/roadtrip. I look at starting pitchers first and evaluate how they have pitched against the opposing teams and how they have faired against similar teams. I look at bullpens and how they have been performing and how much the games have went to the bullpen. I look at righties/lefties and opposing batters. There are a lot of factors that go into picking a winner in baseball. I believe more so than basketball or football. I'll look at ballpark dimensions and what field certain hitters favor. I could go on forever.
The main thing is that I pick winners. Thats all I care about. After all, thats what makes us the money and pays bills for some of us. Im not out to get rich or lucky and hit 8 games in one night or 40 games in a week. Ive been down that path before and all it leads to is being barrelled in and owing the bookies more than you can imagine. I play my 8-10 plays a week and make all I need as an extra income. After all, thats what most of us here do. We arent professional gamblers, living only from gambling earnings. Contrary to what some may say, they are only lying.
So whether you bet 10 bucks a game or 1000 bucks a game, hell even if you are just having fun and betting points on this site, Im here to help you out any way I can. If you ever have any questions about a game, a player, conditions or anything you can think of. Just ask. Thats why Im here. I'll post my picks but I dont expect anyone to follow them all. If you see something you like and agree with me on, cool, lets do work. If you dont agree with my plays, thats cool too. Lets discuss it and see where we might could help each other. Even if Im only on one game, feel free to ask my about your play or game of interest and I will give you my input. After all, this site is here for all of us to help each other to become better handicappers and make more money. So now that Im back, lets do this and hurt the bookies.

Well guys, I am back to posting here full time. I took a couple year hiatus to recoup funds and take a break from the sports gambling world. Anyone who followed any of my plays in the past knows I made some good plays in NBA and MLB. This time around will be the same except Im gonna bring it on strong for the NFL season. I will guarantee a big time showing in plays this NFL season and for the rest of the MLB season. JJ, Im back baby!
